Glossary
Activation
Activation is a process that verifies licensed use of MathWorks™ products. This process validates the license and ensures that it is not used on more computers or by more users than allowed by the license option you have acquired.
Activation Key
The Activation Key is the unique code that identifies a license. It is used to activate the license. The Activation Key also allows licensed end users to associate their MathWorks Account with a license.
Activation type
The activation type (known as installation type prior to R2008a) designates how a license may be used and determines how many users and computers are authorized to run the software. Some licenses have a preset activation type. The license administrator can also set the activation type in the License Center. Common activation types include:
Administrator
The administrator (known as the primary contact prior to R2008a) manages end users and can perform license administration tasks in the License Center, such as assigning products on Group licenses. All MathWorks licenses require an administrator to serve as the main source of communication for the license. For an Individual license, the administrator is often also the end user.
Asset manager
The asset manager (known as the passcode contact prior to R2008a) is an optional contact on a license that has the same privileges as the administrator. There can be multiple asset managers on a license.
Association with a license
Association with a license is the process of linking your MathWorks Account to a specific MathWorks license, thereby ensuring that you are provided with the product rights to which you are entitled. Associating with a license is required to activate software with the Stand-Alone Named User activation type.
Deactivation
Deactivation is the process of rendering MathWorks software unusable. You can deactivate software directly on the computer where it is installed, or, if the Validate from Product setting in the License Center is enabled, you can deactivate software in the License Center.
Designated Computer
Designated Computer is an activation type for Individual and Group license options. Software may be installed and activated on one computer, such as a shared workstation in a testing lab, for non-simultaneous use by multiple people.
File Installation Key
The File Installation Key is primarily for off-network use. It is a code that determines which products may be installed. The File Installation Key is not unique to a license.
Group Member license
A Group Member license is a unique license associated with a Group license. There is one Group Member license for each MATLAB® seat on a Group license. A Group Member license is activated in the same manner as an Individual license.
Host ID
The host ID is the unique identifier of an individual computer or server. When The MathWorks generates a License File for a specific computer, it is locked to the host ID of that computer. For some UNIX® computers, the 32-bit host ID is used. For Linux®, Mac®, and Windows® computers, the Ethernet (MAC) address is used.
Installation
Installation is the process of putting products on an individual computer or network server.
License Center
The License Center is a Web-based tool that enables you to track and manage your MathWorks licenses.
License File
The License File is a unique file that contains authentication codes and computer-specific, and in some cases user-specific, information. The License File is created by The MathWorks during activation and is required to use MathWorks products.
License options
License options confer specific rights, restrictions, and obligations under which a licensee may install and use MathWorks software, in accordance with the Software License Agreement.
Licensed end user
The licensed end user is the person who uses the software.
Maintenance contact
The maintenance contact is the person who receives all software maintenance renewal quotes for specified licenses.
MathWorks Account
A MathWorks Account is a persons account on the MathWorks Web site. It provides access to license information and many other benefits. A MathWorks Account is required to activate an Individual or Group license as Stand-Alone Named User. Having an account is also recommended to simplify the installation and activation process.
Operating System/Hardware Platform
Operating System/Hardware Platform is the specific operating system and hardware architecture for the computer on which activation occurs. The choices are Windows 32-bit, Windows 64-bit, Linux 32-bit, Linux 64-bit, Mac OS® X (Intel), and Solaris™ SPARC®.
Operating system user name
The Operating system user name is the ID under which a user gains access to a computer. It is also known as Windows/UNIX user name or computer login name. Stand-Alone Named User activation types lock to this user name in addition to the computer host ID.
Redesignation, computer
A computer redesignation is the transfer of a License File from one computer to another when the number of activations remaining on the license is 0. Computer redesignations on a license can occur up to four times per year. You can redesignate a computer from the License Center if the license has the Validate from Product option enabled.
Redesignation, end user
An end user redesignation is the transfer of a license from one end user to another end user within an organization.
Redesignation, product
Product redesignation is the transfer of products from one license to another license owned by the same organization. You can redesignate products on a Group license from the License Center if the Group Member license you are redesignating has the Validate from Product option enabled.
Stand-Alone Named User
An activation type for Individual and Group license options. Software may be installed and activated on one or more computers, such as an office computer and a laptop, for use by one user. The software runs only when the named user is logged in to the computer.
Update media recipient
The update media recipient (known as the update contact prior to R2008a) is an optional contact on a license that receives all software media shipments (DVD) from The MathWorks for the license.
Validation
Validation is an automatic, periodic check to ensure the authenticity of License Files in use. The parameters checked during the validation process are determined by the activation type, but can include version number, products, and operating system user name.
